María José Higueras

María José Higueras Ruiz (Granada, 1989) is a graduate Media Communication from University of Granada, where she also received her Ph.D. in Social Sciences. Her doctoral thesis revolves around the audiovisual profile of the showrunner as executive-creative producer of TV series, their competences, responsibilities, and authorial dynamics. Her thesis has an international mention and a distinction cum laude. This text has received the first award for communication thesis of ATIC organization (2020). Dr. Higueras Ruiz has participated in several research project, such as in the National Research Project “Transmedialización y crowdsourcing en las narrativas de ficción y no ficción audiovisuales, periodísticas, dramáticas y literarias” (2018-2021) from the University of Granada.

She is currently working at the Sociology and Communication Department (University of Salamanca) as Assistant Professor. Her research interests focus on media production studies, social representation in TV fiction, analysis content, television studies, and television aesthetic. Her articles have appeared in international journals, such as Review of Trans Representation in Spanish TV Fiction. Analysis of All about Dafne (HBO Max, 2021) -Revista Mediterránea de Comunicación (2023)-, or The Importance of Latinx Showrunners in Getting Authentic Latino TV Series in English-Language American Television: The Case of Tanya Saracho and Vida (Starz, 2018–2020) -International Journal of Communication (2021)-.
