PROJECT
One of the most common and widespread types of discrimination that fuels hate speech on social media is Islamophobia, with Muslim people being the main victims affected in Mediterranean countries, including Spain.
During adolescence, young people develop their full personality and critical thinking skills. Therefore, learning through observational models is important, and the acquisition of new behaviors is influenced by the actions of others or by media content.

Young people are among the most vulnerable to such harmful content. Therefore, it is essential to explore their perceptions and attitudes toward this type of hate speech and to take action to support their development of self-awareness and critical thinking.
The YIS-HATE project will conduct an in-depth analysis of young people’s perceptions and attitudes toward Islamophobic hate speech on social media, and it will develop educational and didactic tools to raise awareness and counter this issue.
To this end, the project combines complementary quantitative and qualitative methods, including a survey, focus groups, and the proposal of a training and awareness-raising initiative aimed primarily at young people. This initiative will address the impact of Islamophobic hate speech on society, improve their perceptions and attitudes, and help combat intolerance.
GOALS:
The general objective is to analyze young people’s perceptions and attitudes toward Islamophobic hate speech on social media and to develop didactic and educational tools to raise awareness and counter the problem.
Specific goals:
- To measure the social perception and attitudes of young people toward Islamophobic discourse in Spain, with particular attention to potential disparities based on gender, age, and socioeconomic status.
- To understand the factors influencing young people’s perceptions of Islamophobic hate speech disseminated on social media, delving into the experiences, motivations, and underlying perspectives behind their responses.
- To develop a massive open online training course (MOOC) for young people, their parents, teachers, caregivers, and youth organizations, providing tools to recognize hate speech, raise awareness, and contribute to the fight against it.
