INTRODUCTION

While hate speech has been widely studied in adults, less attention has been paid to this particular type of intolerant narrative among young people, even though we know that the acquisition of new behaviors and role models is crucial during this stage of development.

Previous studies show that the behaviors of adolescents and young people are especially influenced by the media and social content. Moreover, intolerant and hateful narratives are often cultivated at an early age and later become radicalized. Among the manifestations of hate speech we find racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, LGBTIQ-phobia, gender discrimination, or aporophobia; however, other specific types—such as hatred toward climate activists—can also emerge before adulthood.

An innovative way to study this phenomenon is by using an intersectional approach, which means analyzing multiple characteristics of rejection simultaneously. In this context, there are few studies examining the specific patterns of young people’s consumption of multiple types of online hate speech and the ways to counteract their effects. CeMIYA aims to address this gap through a comprehensive and integrated approach, justified by young people’s increasing exposure to online hate speech, which can have harmful effects on their psychological well-being and social attitudes.

The project seeks to contribute to knowledge generation in this field in Spain by employing traditional social science techniques (both quantitative and qualitative) alongside cutting-edge computational methods to monitor and counteract the effects of hate speech in media and social networking platforms used by young audiences (aged 13–24).

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives are:

O1. To conceptualize the different types of hate speech present among young audiences through the development of manual and automated tools for monitoring media and social network content, employing textual and audiovisual content analysis to identify and categorize new forms of intolerance within this population.

O2. To design, implement, and evaluate a social intervention strategy based on narrative persuasion, adapted to the different characteristics of young audiences, with the aim of increasing empathy and reducing intolerance, thereby proposing a tool to mitigate the potential impact of hateful content.

O3. To develop and implement a training toolkit for young people, their parents, teachers, caregivers, and youth organizations, providing resources to recognize hate speech, raise awareness, and contribute to the fight against it.
